Vimeo for MacOS

 Vimeo for MacOS

Video producers are capturing more and more content at higher resolutions as technology advances to permit it. As the industry shifts to a distributed, cloud-based workflow, ingesting all this content for storage and sharing has become difficult to manage for creators . With these this in mind we embarked on a project to solve this problem with a desktop app and gain a foothold in the real estate that really mattered for our users.

It started with an integration

The first decision we made was to build our desktop app directly into the MacOS menu bar. A foothold in this prime ‘always on’ real estate would allow us to build file actions inside MacOS itself, a strategy that had proved highly successful for Dropbox. This also allowed us to build tight upload integrations inside Final Cut Pro, Apple’s own professional video editing tool.

But quickly morphed into something more (video playback, management)

With our first release candidate completed, it quickly became apparent that bringing fundamental actions like preview and share to this experience would be a powerful unlock for our users. We built a stripped down asset management interface that gave access to the tools creators needed fast and often.

Now it’s a tool for power users

The real step change in this product came once we built a system that would allow for a user to connect any folder on their desktop directly to a project on Vimeo. This allows users to create ad-hoc pipelines to cloud storage from anywhere on their computer. With this ‘set and forget’ connection, users can get an almost limitless amount of content uploaded to Vimeo using a pipeline impervious to bad wifi or system failures.

And they love it

At launch we were heavily featured by Apple in the MacOS store, and to this day the app is recommended as a companion product for new purchasers of Final Cut Pro. With this support we were able to quickly gain a substantial presence in the eco-system.
